Our Review:

The CNNMoney iPhone application is, as one would expect, well-designed and extremely informative regarding financial news across the country and the world.  It is pretty much an RSS feed, but a generally prettier one than others I have seen.

There are other CNN news feed programs for the iPhone, of course, some of which have a pretty good interface.  The thing I like most about CNNMoney is its layout of white space in relation to the color.  You just know where to tap to get the information you need.

The colors used are standard to the CNN website, of course.  And like the CNN website you get a feed of the latest financial news, can get stock quotes (which are delayed 15 minutes) and can watch video.  You can even customize the application to show the sections you prefer.

It's possible to refresh the running stock quotes along the top by tapping the icon on the left.  Tapping the informational icon on the right tells you the content of each section, which is so obvious in the first place I don't understand why it needs explaining.  But, who am I to judge?

It's the sort of application I dig and it's very well done.  I can't even think of any improvements the software needs.  It's fine as it is.  The app is even free (although as with the CNN site and with most free apps, there are banner ads to contend with).

In order to get to CNN on my device I have to launch Safari and browse there.  So I ask this: why hasn't CNN created a similar app for its entire portal?

Pros: very easy to use and informative

Cons: why isn't there an app like this for the entire CNN site?

Our Review:

I've been using FriendFeed more and more and really like the way in which it allows me to quickly and easily keep up to date on what my friends are doing. Sure, most are on Twitter so I can follow...

Judie as she strolls through Paris,

or

Patrick while he goes crazy over the latest (fill in the sport...) game.

With FriendFeed, though, I get to see what they are interested in and what they have recently posted, as well. I can even see their photos or share in their latest music finds.

The folks at FriendFeed describe the goal of their service as striving to

...make content on the Web more relevant and useful for you by using your existing social network as a tool for discovering interesting information. You get a customized feed made up of the content that your friends shared — from news articles to family photos to interesting links and videos. And your friends get their customized feeds, full of the cool stuff that you’ve shared.

FriendFeed's new iPhone optimized site takes it to the next level by making it simple to keep up while on the go. Patrick over at JustAnotheriPhoneBlog turned me on to it and had this to say--

It looks very sharp and feels great to work with so far.  It features larger fonts and elements on the page... (and) makes it even more handy to find things quickly and interact with quickly.

I couldn't agree more. The new iPhone optimized site makes it far easier to use.

Moreover, since FriendFeed is about keep up to date on the go, and "native Applications" are mostly abut having information when a data connection IS nOT available, FriendFeed is one of those applications for which a web app is more than sufficient.

Our recommendation- get yourself a FriendFeed account and create a WebClip to it on your iPhone's homepage.

Toodedo is another excellent web-based task management service. Like Remember The Milk it offers a full web portal as well as an iPhone/iPod Touch Optimized site. It offers the ability to print a foldable booklet of your most important tasks and has a more fully developed ability to export and importtasks from other applications.

A super review of Toodledo can be found over at The iPhone Blog.

An excellent comparision of some of the choices in the web-based task-management world can be found here at www.JustAnotheriPhoneBlog.com.

Our Review:

SugarSync is far more than just a backup program.  In my review over at JustAnotherMobileMonday I wrote that,

"On the simplest level SugarSync provides online backup and file storage. It smoothly and unobtrusively backs up selected files or folders. SugarSync, however, is a whole lot more."

SugarSync keeps some or all your files in sync across multiple computers. It is cross-platform and works with Windows and Mac as well as offering web-access. Resident versions are available for Blackberry and Windows Mobile and an iPhone optimized website provides easy to use access to all your files.

SugarSync uses the industry's highest standard of encryption in both directions during sync, as well as while files are stored on their redundant servers.

A variety of subscription levels allow you to get just the right mount of storage for you and a free 45 day Trial lets you determine if SugarSync is worth the cost of a subscription. We think it is and recommend trying it out.

I have been using it since the Beta was first released and currently have a 60GB subscription. I have not had a single issue with the service and am happy to be one of their customers.

One of the biggest oversites when the iPhone was first released was the lack of a good Task management program. Fortunately services such as Remember the Milk make up for it. Remember the Milk is a web-based solution that works as well through its iPhone optimized website  as it does through a full pc or Mac browser.

The basic service is free while a Pro account, which provides priority email support, access to the iPhone and iPod Touch optimized website, sync via Blackberry and Windows Mobile devices and more, costs only $25 a year.

It is an inexpensive service that is well worth the cost. I am a fan and a customer. A full review can be found here at JustAnotheriPhoneBlog.

Evernote has quickly become one of my "I can't live without it" applications. It is one of the new breed of "Hybrid Services" that have a web-based component but also runs as a resident progam on both Windows and Mac. Evernote also offers a resident program for Blackberries and Windows Mobile. A web-based  interfaces work beautifully on iPhone and we look forward to the release of a resident application for iPhone in the very near future.
