Hell hath no fury like a dragon scorned—a baby dragon, to be exact. In the recently released iPhone- and iPad-compatible game Dragon Wrath, available at a bargain launch price of only $0.99, a newly hatched as well as newly orphaned dragon is hell-bent on exacting revenge for her dead mother, apparently murdered by greedy humans from the villages not far from the dragon’s lair. You, proud wielder of an iOS device, gets the surprisingly entertaining job of controlling this angered dragon.
At first launch, you’ll be asked to create a new player profile. This is necessary because Dragon Wrath supports multiple profiles. Knowing this, you can spend minutes and even hours playing the game using your profile, then lend your device to your friend without having to worry about your progress being interfered with since your friend can create a profile of his own and play using it. Along with your game progress, what’s also saved under your profile is your own custom dragon. You can choose from any number of combinations of dragon features and even select whether your dragon breathes fire, acid, frost, or bolts.
Dragons are often associated with medieval fantasy settings, and Dragon Wrath uses this trope as a tent pole on which to build the vengeful dragon’s world. Outside the dragon’s lair, there are kingdoms inhabited, it turns out, by peasants, warriors, and monarchs. The locations are laid out in an old-fashioned map reminiscent of J. R. R. Tolkien’s hand-drawn maps in The Lord of the Rings, shown in between game levels.
Most of the levels are set in villages, where you dodge spears and arrows while killing a certain number of peasants and grounded or airborned warriors, indicated in the upper right corner of the game screen and decremented for every individual you kill. Killing your enemies entails either destroying them by breathing your chosen deadly substance towards them or by running into or flying right above them to eat them. The latter way is actually recommended since enemy flesh nourishes the dragon and replenishes its life bar situated on the upper left corner of the screen. It’s also the way to go if listening to the people’s panicked screams proves oddly amusing to you, which adds to the game’s already high entertainment value. Other levels, including ones where you battle a boss or a gigantic worm, are more challenging and more rewarding. There are also levels where winged harpies would let out a wail that would confound the dragon, resulting in the reversal of the dragon’s sense of direction.
The controls employed in Dragon Wrath are very easy to master. You can even customize their locations on the screen for every player profile. Right smack in the middle at the bottom of the screen is a small sub-screen, which gives an overview of the dragon and its enemies’ real-time locations, represented as color-coded dots. The dragon’s movements are controlled using a circular directional pad located on the lower left corner of the screen, to the left of the sub-screen. You simply move your thumb around the pad to propel the dragon towards your desired direction. There’s also a big action button on the lower right, used mainly for fire/acid/frost/bolt-breathing, but in latter levels a smaller action button will become available for activating the dragon’s dash attack, which is just one of the many power-ups in the game. Power-ups are introduced at certain stages as you delve further into the world of Dragon Wrath, adding to the rewards of helping a wrathful dragon avenge the murder of its mommy through 37 enjoyable levels.
