Have you ever wondered how loud a sound is? Screaming kids, a rock concert, sport fans screaming? Wonder no more. Measure it with Decibel! |
I love the fact that, thanks to developers, the usefulness of the iPhone is expanding into areas never-before considered fertile ground for smartphones and handheld computers. Decibel is an example of one such use. The iPhone as a decibel meter... who would have thought?
Decibel is simple and fun to use. Start the app and watch the analog meter... what could be easier.
The developer warns--
“Even though we have tested Decibel with professional grade equipment with good results, this application is for recreational use only.”
Despite this, Decibel seemed to work well. This was especially so since I was using an iPhone 3G which, apparently, has a far better performing microphone than the Gen 1 iPhone. So what did I learn?
I learned that I like to listen to the Dandy Warhols at an average of 66dBs. I watched last night’s episode of The Unit at an average of 64 dBs. and when my golden retriever wanted to go out this morning, her bark reached a peak of 105dBs. (No wonder her bark wakes us up most mornings.)
Quick Take
Value: Medium
Would I Buy Again: Perhaps
Learning Curve: Low
Who is it for: Anyone who wants to know how loud something is
What I like: Easy to use, quickly measures volume
What I Don’t: Assuming its calibration is accurate (I have no way to know) nothing
Final Thought: This is a cool app that is one more example of the iPhone’s expanding use.
