Plants vs. Zombies is one of those games that I had heard of but never played. Given it’s popularity in the App Store, I suspect I’m in the minority. What really sold me on the game was the related music video that is going around the Interwebs.
The game is a strange blend of strategic defense, cuteness and gore. I’m sure that someday someone will release plush versions of the game’s zombies. You can read more about the origins of the game here.
The game is fairly simple to play. It has a tutorial mode and a "Quick Play" mode that takes you right into the action. The objective of the game is to keep zombies from reaching your house by planting specially-bred plants to repel them. You collect points via sunlight in the form of little suns that float to the ground which you have to tap. When you collect enough points, you can plant certain types of mutant flowers that do things like shoot cannons, create an explosion ("cherry bomb") or collect additional sunlight.
I’ve never been a fan of tower defense games, but this one has enough cute elements within it to merit amusement. Sadly it lacks my favorite feature for games. The user cannot play his or her audio library while destroying zombies.
The $2.99 price tag is a little high (although that hasn’t stopped it from being #1 in the App Store), but iTunes games tend to be targeted to kids and this particularly game can be interpreted as a kid’s horror movie. If you like strategic defense games with cute humor, then look no further.

Would I Buy Again:Not at this price. Perhaps at $.99.
Learning Curve:Low to Medium.
Who Is It For:Strategic gamers with a penchant for cute horror.
What I Like:The graphics. The animation. The horror. The cute.
What I Don't Like:Price seems a little high. Can't play audio library in the background.
Final Statement:Buy this game or the zombies win.
