xCube is a classic 3D puzzle, and is also a revolutionary new variation to the classic puzzle. Exercise your mind at a new precedent level. Fun for all ages wanting a mental challenge. |
Here is an application that is interesting. It’s a Rubik’s cube! Well, not officially but ironically, just a few days back while speaking to a co-worker who had a Rubik’s cube at his desk, I was toying with the concept of the Rubik’s cube, twisting and turning, and trying to make sense of how to solve this cube of madness and as I have thought of it more and more, all and behold, the app store has it! Now I can do my own twisting and turning (well, flicking and pressing, on the iPhone).
I grew up with the Rubik’s cube and went through the hype of it back in the day but I was always in the cool crowd when the Rubik’s cubes were for geeks and nerds. I’m kidding.
On a serious note, this is a solid application. Yes, part of solving the Rubik’s cube is perhaps being able to touch and twist it in your hands but to have it always with you with several different types of cubes to solve, this gets the job done!
You have the option to change the type of cube you want to solve (the standard 3x3, 4x4, 5x5, etc.), the cube’s color (stickers), the background, will it be timed versus un-timed (which also keeps track of your high scores), overall it’s simplistic in it’s design and well there is really nothing else more to it.
As far as the controls are concerned, it’s intuitive, swipe across, swipe up and down, use two fingers to orient the cube to another position, it does it all to help you solve it.
From a playability perspective, I think, once you have figured out how to solve it, like the rest of the Rubik’s cube, it’ll go back into the back of the drawer for another 10 years till it becomes a craze again.
For now, I’m enjoying it over and over, of course, resisting the temptation not look online on how to solve this.
In my opinion, if you have enjoyed the Rubik’s cube of the past, then you’ll enjoy the present.
Quick Take:
Value: Low
Would I Buy Again: Maybe
Learning Curve: Low
Who is it for: Anyone who love solving puzzles and games and, of course, loves the Rubik’s cube.
What I like: Simple and portability, unlike the original thing.
What I Don't: Nothing
Final Statement: If you like solving puzzles, then this is definitely a classic to add to your collection.

Amaze your friends when you can solve the Rubik's Cube in under a minute or two... on your iPhone. Honestly, it takes me a little longer than normal to do it on my iPod Touch than in RL, but it's great to always have with you, ready to solve, in any size. There's a variation, too, that can only exist in a virtual world that is kind of neat. Do I use it all that often? Not as much. I do prefer the real thing. But it's nice to have around when you get into a puzzle discussion, or an iPhone discussion, and whip this app out!
