Some apps are so simple in their function, that we hardly a need to explain what it actually does. Flashlight by More Blu Sky is one of these apps. Flashlight is one of a group of apps that have popped up recently that make use of the LED flash on the iPhone 4 as a flashlight. Many were worried that Apple would reject this unconventional use of its hardware, but for the time being, Apple appears to be giving its blessing to these apps.

In a niche that is so basic it can be hard to differentiate one's self from the pack of other apps out there. Flashlight does a fair job of this by keeping the their app simple and easy to use, while incorporating the features that users request. There app consists of a large round button in the middle of the screen to turn the light on and off. For early versions of this app, that was the extent of this one trick pony. More Blu Sky wasn't content to release such a simple app and just walk away. They have recently made an update that apart from bug fixes, added a strobe feature to the mix. The strobe can be accessed with a left swipe and the rate of the strobe can be adjusted with a slider.

This app shows that even a simple app can have a lot of thought put into its design and that the end result will be a superior app that pulls ahead from the crowds of similar apps. If you have an iPhone 4, and would like to use your LED as a flashlight from time to time, Flashlight app is the go to app.

GoodGuide is an example of a good idea with a poor execution.  The app is a bar code scanner much like a myriad of other apps such as RedLaser, but once the product is scanned it tells you how well the product meets green standards (how environmentally friendly it is, etc).  Unlike other apps which seem to concentrate on food, this concentrates on any item that has a bar code attached to it.

The scores seem somewhat arbitrary (and this is coming from someone who gives arbitrary opinions on iPhone apps) but it seems to be from a score of 0 to 10 with 10 being the highest.  The app also gives a listing of the products with the best ratings.

One of the major problems with the apps is the limited list of products.  There are only 65,000 products in the database, which may seem like a lot but is only a small sample of the myriad of products in the world.  It is possible to search the database for a particular app if you install on a device without a camera like an iPod touch.

You can also keep lists of products stored on the device, if there are any you prefer due to their "good" rating.  It's also possible to filter products by certain criteria such as product type and their degree of enviornmental friendliness.

The other annoying aspect of the app is that it seems to automatically sign a person in using their Facebook ID.  Haven't these people heard of privacy?

I give the app a resounding "eh".  Once again, it's a good idea but the developers definitely need to work on this one some more.  Good ideas would include a good help menu and a definition of each score type along with a larger database of products.

The My Scotts Lawn app (the current version is for US lawns), is designed for lawn enthusiasts to help them stay on top of their game.

Lawn experts know that regular feedings yield beautiful lawns. With our Lawn Program section, you'll never miss another application and suffer from neighborhood embarrassment. It gives you a customized schedule of regular lawn feedings. Simply enter your zip code or location, choose a grass type, as well as where you shop, and save the recommended schedule.

Every time you apply the recommended product, go over to the My Lawn Profile section and add it into your product log.

Product Log allows you to:
1. Choose the product you applied or plan to apply
2. Indicate the date
3. Add a comment (what the weather was like, why you applied it, etc.)
4. Remember what you did, so you can time your next lawn feeding. You can also add other Scotts lawn products that aren’t in your recommended lawn program.

Once you get your lawn in shape, show it off with pictures. Included in the My Lawn Profile section is the ability to “Track With Photos.”
1. Take a photo of your lawn or an area of the lawn
2. Give it a date and a rating
3. Add a description, such as “this is a before photo of the area where I planted the Scotts seed”
4. Track the progress over time and see the benefits of your work.
