I’m about to post a favorable review on SWAT. This time I’m feeling just as generous, if not more so, to Target Tap, another great little game for the iPhone.

Released just around the time I posted the SWAT piece, I was lucky enough to score the game while it was being offered for free. Now it’s available for $0.99. But mind you, it’s well worth the price. It’s addictive, uncomplicated, addictive, and sleek. Did I mention it’s addictive?

The rules of the game are quite simple; there are only three, in fact. Tap ‘Instructions’ on the home screen to be enlightened: (1) Hit the red targets as soon as they pop up for a higher score! (2) If you see a cloud zooming by with a 1-Up sign on it tap it for an extra life! (3) If you miss a red target or hit any other color target you will lose a life!

That’s it! I believe there’s nothing more to say on how to play the game. It really is that simple. You just have to be at your most alert every time you play the game to keep beating your record. The game starts out slow, but the rate at which targets pop up and disappear becomes faster and faster as you progress. You might also want to start sharpening your reflexes as early as now for when the Global High Scores update comes out. You’ll be facing tough competition, for sure.

While the overall look, as well as the sound effects, of Target Tap leans towards the cute (The clouds in particular remind me of the MobileMe logo.), it adds to its appeal as a neat pick up and play game, speaking to the inner child in each of us, if I say so myself. The targets are, well, just targets, a welcome departure from the bugs, turkeys, gophers and bombs of similar apps that came before it. This means your kids, nieces and nephews will absolutely love the game. Don’t be so keen on sharing it with them though. I was foolish enough to let my colleague’s precocious little boy play Target Tap during our Christmas party last night and was horrified when I took my iPhone back. The app momentarily hanged on itself again. Damn, I thought, that could only mean one thing: a new high score.

Quick Take

Value: High
Would I Buy Again: Yes!
Learning Curve: Very low
Who is it for: People who prefer not to hurt insects, birds and rodents on their iPhones.
What I like: Just three rules to remember, and a nice, sleek design.
What I Don’t: Hangs briefly when registering a new high score.

Final Statement:
Right on target.

Read the Developer's Notes:
Test your reflexes with this exciting new game made exclusively for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Hit the red targets quickly to pop them and build up massive combos, but watch out for other colored targets which will make you lose a life! Also don't miss any red ones because you will also lose a life!

Look out for the one-up cloud to score an extra life! How long can you survive!
