User Rating:One of the benefits of the release of games for the iPhone and iPod touch is that what’s old is new again. There have been revitalizations in the App Store of such classic video games as Pac Man and Dragon’s Lair. Now, there is the granddaddy of all RPG games, Final Fantasy as well as its sequel, Final Fantasy II.
Obviously, in today’s market, the graphics for this program are very dated, no matter how cutting edge they seemed when the game was first introduced. For amazing graphics, you may want to stick with more recent versions. The game even goes to great lengths to keep its feel from way back then, even going so far as limiting the names of each avatar to six characters.
The game, like any RPG, is fairly involved. The intro alone takes a few minutes with no discernable way to skip it. The controls can be difficult to use since they were originally made with a different type of interface involved. As you wander around the land using the direction controls in the lower left corner, you encounter goblins and various other creatures. With a strange back-and-forth battle reminiscent of old Dungeons and Dragons games, your party kills them and earns experience points. It’s very retro.
The interface is a little awkward, but after a while you end up getting used to it. The best updated feature is auto-save. If you close the app or are interrupted, the game will automatically save your progress. When you restart, just hit the resume button and it will start off right where you left off. This is a must feature for an RPG of this size, without it, there is no way you could possibly finish the game. Of course if i got myself into trouble in the game, this would be a good way for me to temporarily ‘pause’ and get my way out.
There are many games that owe their existence to Final Fantasy. World of Warcraft, to name one. However if you were a fan of the original and want a retro version from your childhood (and have $9 to spare), then your Final Fantasy has come true.
Quick Take
Value:Medium to High.
Would I Buy Again:$9 makes me hesitate. For a lesser price, yes.
Learning Curve:High for those who have never played before.
Who Is It For:People who like 80's video games. Final Fantasy completists.
What I Like:Retro feel. Good storyline. Goes to great lengths to keep it true to its original game.
What I Don't Like:The price.
Final Statement:If this keeps up, we may have Final Fantasy XII for the iPhone before too long.
