User Rating:The door bell rings and you open the door to find a small package that has the instructions written on the side "feed with candy." Sounds easy right? not when you are playing Chillingo’s latest offering, Cut the Rope. This simple casual game tasks you with delivering a round candy to the gapping mouth of a hungry gremlin. One look at this adorable little green face and you wont be able to resist the task of feeding it.
Cut the rope bears a striking resemblance in style and layout to App Store favorite, Angry Birds. It’s no surprise then that Cut the Rope is the app that has finally unseated Angry Birds from the number one sport in the paid apps list. It is hard not to speak about Cut the Rope without making comparisons to Angry Birds. Each contains colorful graphics, simple gameplay, large number of levels, and most of all, they are very addictive. Cut the Rope is kicking it off with one hundred levels across four "boxes" where your objective is to cut ropes to deliver the candy, while trying to also hit all three stars spread across the level. Each box introduces most complexity to the puzzle. From candy stealing spider, to stars that disappear after a certain time, you will find a good variety of level design.
When I say this game is addictive, I mean it has me glued to my iPhone for two hours from the first moment I started the app. The only problem with this is that after about two hours I had completed the entire game with three stars in each level. There is always the high scores on GameCenter or Crystal, which can be increased by completing the levels faster, but the meat of the game was over very quickly. This doesn’t bother me so much as there is a clear message in the game that more levels are on their way. If Chillingo follows through with a large amount of content like Angry Birds has, then I doubt there will be too many complaints about the length of the game at release.
What I was concerned about what how easy the levels are. This game is at its essence a puzzle game with a small amount of action with some quick movements needed to complete some puzzles. The puzzles in the initial levels are so obvious and easy that I only had to repeat a handful of levels in order to obtain three stars. Perhaps the difficulty is set lower to make this game approachable to younger audience, but I would hope that as this game is expanded, that the difficulty will be ramped up to give the more savvy gamers a challenge. In spite of this, Cut the Rope is a delightful game that has so much potential to become the next big mega-hit on the iOS app store. Cut the Rope is available for $.99 right now so get your own cute green monster and start cutting those ropes.
