Let’s face it, Tetris is a classic. There are no operating systems out there that don’t have some sort of variation of this game. The fact that EA has released a new version (and removed the old one from the App Store) should be of no surprise to anyone.
Tetris 2.0 for iPhone has some neat tricks. It’s not just the classic marathon game. You can also play two new versions. The first is called One-Touch which gives you the option of putting the next shape in one of multiple locations on the current board (shown in an outline form) and you have to pick the optimal one. The other new version is called Galaxy and is similar in concept to One-Touch. Rows already exist with one block missing and you have to touch the area (again shown in outline form) that you think the next shape should go. The objective of Galaxy is to eliminate all the rows until you reach the bottom. There are other nuances of the game such as gravity which I won’t go into at this time. Let me just say it’s an excellent variation.
The graphics have been vastly improved and it almost seems space-age. There are many navigation animations and naturally there’s an Options area to control several aspects of the game such as sound. You can also play Tetris against opponents now via The app also comes with a decent help section.
I suppose my only complaint is that EA considers this a new game rather than a significant upgrade to the previous one and has charged accordingly. Still, at 99 cents, it’s difficult to argue that we’re being ripped off.
This game is a must-have for any Tetris-lover. Particularly if the person in question is obsessive-compulsive.
