‘Beauty in simplicity’ seems to be the approach taken by most iPhone game developers, and Snappers can be added to the canon of games that follows this philosophy.

Although Snappers is a simple game, it’s surprisingly unsimple to describe. The screen is populated with blocks of different sizes and colours, and have a certain number of taps in which to pop them all.

The smallest snappers are blue, then increase in size through yellow, green and finally red. Every time you tap one, it grows to the next colour. Tap a red one, and it explodes, firing four beams that then explode the other snappers.

It’s effectively a game of chain reactions, with a similarly infinite appeal to games like Angry Birds and Siege Hero. There are hundreds of levels to play through, each of a marginally increasing difficulty. This means that the game never feel overwhelming or too difficult.

One minor thing that’s lacking in Snappers is power-ups and visual variety. As you play through the levels, you’d expect there to be some innovative gameplay additions to spice things up, but they never come. Still, it’s one of the most therapeutic and playable free iPhone games to come out recently.
