User Rating:Wings of Valor is a brilliant gem among so many dull titles in the app store. Yet, it does not have any fancy graphics. No thrilling soundtrack. No gruesome aliens or zombies. Just a WW2 fighter plane flying from a carrier, fighting against the enemy. Not to be bad on a side or another, you can play as the US with a F6F Hellcat or as Japan with a A6M Zero (each with their own abilities.)
What’s the game about? Well, I almost gave everything away in the introductory lines. In Wings of Valor you fly a plane from a carrier and back, while cleaning Pacific islands from enemies. Namely, anti-aircraft cannons and vehicles, trucks and bunkers. There are also enemy destroyers in later levels (they are tough) and also enemy planes starting very soon.
The game is in glorious 2D. Yes, the graphics may look lame in the screenshots, but this port of the cult classic Wings of Fury is a truly effective iOS game for iPhone. The app is not universal, although I’ve found no problems in playing it in 2X mode in my iPad, I almost enjoy it more than in my iPod Touch! And as I said, maybe the screenshots don’t look glamorous at all, but the gameplay is superb and after a while you forget about the fancy graphics and just keep playing, and playing and playing.
As you progress in Wings of Valor (I think I got to level 30 already,) levels get tougher (2 islands instead of 1, adding destroyers, fighting more enemy planes) and you earn valor points, which you can exchange for plane enhancements, like anti-armor bullets, rockets, torpedoes or destroyers. We’ll be writing a tutorial-walkthrough for this game soon, too. Stay tuned!
In short: Wings of Valor is a fantastic iOS game with superb playing and smooth controls and graphics.
