The Wider Image seeks to do just that, giving you a wider perspective of what lies behind an image. Created by Thomson Reuters, the app presents users with quality news rather than bombard them with headliners like what most news applications do. The Wider Image gives users only the finest, read-worthy selections, and does a beautiful job in presenting each individual story.
In my opinion, navigating through The Wider Image felt more like scrolling through a photo album than an electronic newspaper. Articles were displayed via panels of beautifully taken snapshots and the whole application seemed to focus more on said photographs rather than the news itself. The Wider Image appeared to place more emphasis on the quality of the photos rather than the content behind said photos given the seemingly nondescript text and the overt placement of vibrant photos.
Of course, given that content is carefully selected and presented to readers, it will definitely run dry rather quickly. I found myself running out of articles to browse through rather quickly and hopefully the developers invest more time towards updating the app. While of course I could always switch to a conventional news application for my daily dose of trivia, The Wider Image does indeed bring new perspective to browsing through articles that would otherwise be found boring.
A free app, this one gets my nod of approval.
