User Rating:Inspired from the success of brain-cracking games like 100 floors and Doors&Rooms, The Room was released by FireProof Games and today, we are taking a look at the free version – The Room Pocket.
To begin with, this game is not for everyone; only puzzle-maniacs with an iPhone 4s or 5 or an iPad (boxed in) need to continue reading, as others can’t run this game. On the other hand, if your device is supported, well, isn’t this game awesome?
You are at the house of a scientist who died after making a revolutionary discovery. The secret data lies within a box and in order to keep it from the lesser minds, he has sealed it with hardcore puzzles. Crack it to find out what’s whithin!
Controls are simple with swipe to turn and explore the box. Double tap to zoom in if you find anything interesting. You are given an eye-piece which can spot things the human eye can’t and this will come in handy in almost all levels.
Find concealed buttons to open a hidden drawer and use the key inside to open another rack. Pick up the screwdriver from the rack and remove screws from a panel and find a lock’s combination within. Continue cracking such mind-blowing puzzles till the box is open. This is just a teaser of what you can expect from the game and believe me, it gets much better.
Unfortunately, opening the first box is as far as it goes in the pocket version. I was thrilled and unlocked the rest via in-app purchase. The first box contains another box to be cracked and so on and I can’t wait to see whats inside the final box (will put some spoilers when I find out). Whenever you get stuck, tap the “?” for a clue (3-4 per game).
Spending hours trying to crack safes and solving puzzles will be common with this game. And the sound effects and background score couldn’t get better in building the mystery. I recommend our readers to grab a bite in the pocket version and upgrade if you get the hang of it; Two bucks is the least you can do for this Game of the Year, 2012!
Quick Take
Value:Can't get any higher
Would I Buy Again:Ya, waiting for an update
Learning Curve:Medium-High
Who Is It For:Hard-core puzzle lovers
What I Like:The concept, execution and mystery
What I Don't Like:No native iPad support
Final Statement:Start cracking!
***WARNING: Due to heavy graphics requirements, The Room Pocket is only compatible with the iPhone 4S & upwards, and iPod Touch 5th Generation - it is NOT compatible with the older iPhone 4 or iPod 4th Generation***
The Room Pocket is a Free-To-Try app - you can play the first level for free and if you like it, a one-off fee will unlock the rest of the game.

How are you, old friend?
If you’re reading this, then it worked. I only hope you can still forgive me.
We’ve never seen eye to eye on my research, but you must put such things behind you. You are the only one to whom I can turn.
You must come at once, for we are all in great peril. I trust you remember the house? My study is the highest room.
Press forward with heart. There is no way back now.
AS.
