Meet Percy and Francis, two muscle heads armed with gigantic cannons to wrought havoc on waves of approaching enemies. As much as I enjoyed the prequel, Gun Bros 2 brought a new level of testosterone driven fun while keeping with the same systems that made its predecessor such a hit.
Take an interesting plot circling mass destruction, add a couple of cliche and cheesy acronyms for naming purposes, then finish off with a futuristic landscape setting for a perfect combination.
In this game, players take control of either brother, with the choice being made at the start of the game. Not that it makes much of a difference, because the other brother will still be available throughout the rest of the game as a back-up figure, providing cover fire and the likes helping you take down hordes of enemies. Controls are done via dual joysticks, with one for movement navigation and the other meant for directional shooting. Players are given a few waves of weak enemies to get used to the control system, where simply running or even just standing around without firing a shot is enough to take down enemies thanks to your brother, who will do some shooting himself. As the levels progress, of course, it gets trickier where players will have to focus on taking cover and running out to trade shots with the enemies.
A tip to note would be to make use of the environment while gamplay is in progress. Scattered across levels lie explosive barrels that if shot at, detonate and cause massive damage. Use these to get way from being swamped by your opponents.
Graphics wise, Gun Bros 2 really has all I could ever ask for from a top-down shooter. The 3D graphics give a great animated feel while attention paid to details such as explosions and flames really made the whole gaming experience even better.
In-app purchases will make the later, tougher levels much easier to handle, but they can get rather expensive. A classic example of paying your way through a win.
My only gripe would be the lack of option to toggle between friendly fire. It would really make the game more realistic if there were an option for better players to have friendly fire turned on. Players would then have to be more decisive and careful about their firing accuracy, and of course there should also be times where the partner character accidentally injures the player as well. All this to add an additional depth of challenge into the game.
A free game, this app definitely gets my thumbs up.
