User Rating:If there is one single game type that has dominated the App Store, it has to be the match-three style games. There are version that range in mechanics and style and run the gamut from easy to insanely difficult. Each iteration trying to throw something new at the player to freshen up a genre that is thoroughly saturated in the iOS space. Yum Yum Boy is one of those that eschews the standard top down approach and instead has you building matches from the bottom. Coupled with a colorful cartoon style and humorous story, and you have a possible candidate for a successful game.
Yum Yum Boy starts with a delightful story. You are a little boy named YumYum and you, like most boys, love junk food. The object is you eat said junk food and then spit it back at the descending stacks of food to make matches of three or more of the same food. This will cause them to disappear and you then score points. If you eat up more than one piece of food they will stack in reverse order (how this happens in your stomach is anybody’s guess) when you fire them back. The entire time you must watch out for your mom’s attempts to throw the occasional vegetable your way. Chains or combos can be made by setting up foods to “fall” up into the same food type when the food in the middle disappears. In story mode you must make combos to fill the soda meter which when full will advance you to the next level. The puzzle mode offers a limited number of moves to clear the screen. As you play you will unlock both mini-games as well as an endless mode to see how far you can go.
Yum Yum Boy Game Center support with both achievements and leaderboards. The game controls are all done with swiping and while they get the job done, they are a bit slow to respond in the more hectic moments which makes the game even harder than it would be. While Yum Yum isn’t the most innovative match-three game I have ever played, it is a solid example of the format and for the serious fan is a game that may be worth checking out. There isn’t a lite version, but if you are interested it can be had for $1.99. Pig out!
