When I saw Road Fighter in the App Store, I immediately thought of the great Konami MSX game from 1985 by the same name. And after downloading I discovered this was the right impression. This is a remake of the MSX-1 classic! As a racing game, that was the one I played the most by far. Most notably because the controls were so easy and they don’t try to make your computer into an actual car.

Luckily this iPhone game is trying to be true to the original; the developer didn’t make the mistake of integrating the, to me, crappy steering of ‘real racing’ games. The aim of the game is not to crash into other cars or the side or the side of the road. You steer right or left to avoid cars, water spills, oil spills and trucks. You can however pick up other items, like hearts (+1 life) and more. While you drive the landscape changes; you see beeches, grass/trees, snowy and rainy landscapes etc. When it’s snowy or rainy (and windy?) the car wobbles across the screen and is much harder to keep straight.

All and all, the game is entertaining and fun to play for all ages. For $0.99 I would recommend it to anyone who likes playing a nice, casual game.

I do have some points the developer might consider changing / improving for the next version; the cool thing about the old game was that you had a fuel gauge instead of life points; for me this is a lot more entertaining to play. Running out of fuel is more ‘stressing’ than just bumping and losing a life; this makes the game more interesting and you’ll play it longer. The driving sound could be a lot better and I could not for the life of me get out of a skid; apparently it is possible by pressing the control key but it didn’t work for me.
