User Rating:Lets face it, the iPhone is a wonderful way to carry all kinds of
media, but it is far from being large enough to store all your movies,
photos, and documents. In light of this, Most people have turned to
one of many cloud storage solutions like Dropbox, Zumo, or Box.net to
provide access to their files without having to store them locally.
The problem with these services is that they are also limited in
space, (unless you want to shell out the cash) and also duplicate the
data you are storing on your home computer in the cloud. Bdrive has a
unique solution to this problem. Instead of giving you space on a
server to store your files, Bdrive provides you with the software
tools to run your own personal cloud storage right from your home
computer.
Now, it isn’t truly cloud storage, but the concept is similar as you
can assess the files from any computer you connect to it as well as
the iOS app we are looking at today. Your base server needs to have
Bdrive’s free server software running and from there you can configure
what folders to share. The Bdrive app then lets you connect with the
server using a BID that will keep track of your server’s IP. Once you
are connected you can view any compatible file (images, movies, music,
word docs, etc) and you are able to import photos into your iPhone
library. You can also download files into Bdrive itself so you are
able to view offline, or to move to another server. Bdrive also gives
you the ability to create and move folders.
The interface isn’t the best looking, but it is functional and the app
performed quite well with the test server that I had set up. It is
important to have a high upstream bandwidth to see good performance
with streaming data to your phone. It is also necessary to leave the
computer you are using as a server running all the time, which may not
be an option for some. If you have the hardware and the bandwidth,
Bdrive is definitely a good alternative to paying for a cloud service.
The app is available for both iOS and Android while the server
software is available for Windows and OS X. All the software is free.
We rate this app 4 out of 5 stars.
