What is it with pumpkins and Halloween? Whether they represent human souls in purgatory or whether they were used to light the way on cold autumnal nights, the orange squash has really carved out a niche for itself in popular culture, and it’s safe to say that we’ll be seeing them around for many Halloweens to come.

Not all of us are necessarily adept at carving faces into the damn things though, so Halloween Pumpkin Carver is the perfect app for those of us who feel more at home with a touchscreen than a knife.

This app allows you to carve faces into your Halloween pumpkin, then share them with your friends. The harder you press, the deeper you cut, allowing you to add everything from small scars to gaping mouths to your pumpkin.

Unlike with a real pumpkin, you can just undo single carvings if you go wrong, or reset the the process altogether. Once you’re happy with you creation, you can share it with your friends.

Aside from randomly changing backgrounds and the ability to have a dark or light ambience, there isn’t much variety to the app. Perhaps some objects and ornaments would’ve given the app an element of added excitement. As it stands, the novelty fades quite quickly, as it dawns on you that you’re engaging in a digital version of an already trivial activity. Ahh the futility…
