As a developer it can sometimes seem overwhelming when having to decide which App Store to sell your app on, with all the different App Stores that Apple currently has it isn’t always easy do decide where to focus your attention.

However thanks to new info shared by 2D Boy, the developers of World of Goo, might help make that decision a bit easier. When the app hit one million downloads the company decided to post the download and revenue breakdown on the different App Stores.

According to their numbers:

Of World of Goo’s one million downloads on iOS, 69 percent came from its Universal version, which is optimized for use on both the iPhone and the iPad. That 69 percent of downloads drove 79 percent of revenue, while the 29 percent of installs of the iPhone-specific version accounted for just 17 percent of revenue. Coming in third was the Mac version, which nabbed only 2 percent of total downloads, and generated 4 percent of the profit.

If you examine these numbers it quickly becomes apparent that  you’ll get the most bang for your investment buck starting with universal apps, however you need to remember that Universal apps also require more time on the coding side, and can lead to a more complicated update process, so it’s more of an investment in that regard.

However what it all comes down to, is that if you have any intention of releasing your app for both the iPhone and the iPad, then it is best to create a universal app first.

What about you, would you release an App for only the iPad or the iPhone or would you create a universal app first?
