I don’t have a problem with minimal apps. Especially when it comes to things like organisers and memo’s, there really is no need to complicate things. But when an app is so minimal that even the developer’s official description is only three sentences long, it really is hard to convert it into a review that I don’t feel guilty getting paid for.

AudioTask is definitely the simplest app I’ve ever had to review. The idea is that you voice-record memo’s for yourself that you can refer back to at later dates. However, I disagree with the developer’s description that ‘Task Apps don’t have to be any more complicated than that.’

Aside from recording and deleting memo’s, there is literally nothing else you can do with AudioTask. You can’t edit your memo’s names, which are automatically labelled by the date and time they were recorded. So to browse through them, you have to remember the exact date and time you recorded your memo in order to find it. Surely the idea of memo apps is that they do the ‘remembering’ part for you?

AudioTask is a more stripped-down, uglier and less accessible version of the default Voice Memo app pre-installed on your iPhone. There is no form of organising your memos, and no customisability. Much of the iPhone’s appeal is down to its simplification of life, but this app goes beyond the realm of simplicity and into the pit of arbitrariness. Apps really do have to be more complicated than this.
