There used to be a saying that Macs couldn’t get viruses, well as Apple and Macs gain in popularity unfortunately so does the Malware threats launched directly at Macs. From April 2011 to December 2011 there were 58 different malware attacks aimed at Macs.

When Security lab F-Secure released its 2011 Mac Malware Summary last week, they noted that in 2011 alone Apple’s platform faced “several dozen” new malware attacks.  The report noted that this number is still relatively small compared to the attacks on windows during the same time period.

As you can see on the graph below the most new threats were detected in June when the number reached 12 new malware threats.

Most readers might remember the last big threat which emerged under the name MACDefender anti-virus software. Apple eventually dealt with the issue with a security update. Apple also took precautions and added a daily malware to Mac OS X.
What is interesting is that while Android seems to be more prone to attacks lately, the attacks on iOS still remained relatively small.
