Apple A6 features dual ARM cores, three GPU

Not many things have been known about the A6 processor which powers the iPhone 5. There were a few speculations but that is just about it. That is why the team at Chipworks and iFixit decided to do a microscope-level inspection to the processor.  Their findings proved to be interesting for many considering that the Apple A6 is still a dual-core processor instead of the quad-core that people had expected it to be.

The A6 processor did not follow the basic ARM formula. May it be the Cortex A9 processor or layouts from the Cortex A15. Instead, it has dual-ARM cores for processing normal things but an additional three GPU to process graphics intensive operations. The way it works is still unknown and it unless some company decided to reverse engineer the product, we don’t think that Apple will give out any official announcement or documentations regarding the A6.

With this being said and done, it becomes very clear that Apple now has the capability of engineering their own processors instead of waiting for new designs to be made available. With this being said and done, you will also be looking at processors that will be most suitable for the operating system. This also explains why the iPhone 5 can process more raw data as compared with even the quad-core smartphones.
