Apple has just announced one of the biggest updates to their iPhone and iPod lineup, it’s called Lightning! And is the new 8-pin dock connector.

Phil Schiller states that the biggest reason for changing the dock connector is that Apple has begun doing things that previously required a cable wirelessly. “So a lot has changed, and it’s time for the connector to evolve. Our new connector is called Lightning. So we have Thunderbolt and Lightning.”

What is Lightning? All digital. 8-pins instead of 30. Adaptive interface and improved durability. Reversible, easier to use, 80% smaller.

If you need an adapter for all your old devices, then Apple’s selling one. Furthermore in compliance with the rules from the European Commission Apple has also released a new Lightning to Micro USB adapter for customers in Europe.
