When the iPad was first released the were great debates on whether it would have an  impact on the sales of PCs or not, well now we have the answer. PC unit growth is now expected to atrophy to one percent over the 2012 and 2013 calendar years. This new number is much smaller than the previous estimates that saw growth for the sector at 2 percent and 5 percent for 2012 and 2013.

This past Thursday Morgan Stanley released data from its latest AlphaWise global consumer survey, they concluded that tablet demand and PC cannibalization rates are much higher than previously estimated.

Another reason why tablets might be more in demand than PCs are that many consumers await the Fall launch of Windows 8 and therefore haven’t bought a new computer in a while. With big-box retailers less likely to hold large inventories, PC unit growth is expected to decelerate for the next two quarters followed by a rebound by the end of 2012.

Many would guess that Apple may be a victim of its own success with the huge popularity of the iPad, there still isn’t that big a risk that the iPad will cause cannibalization of Mac sales, since the number of iPads sold is so huge that it won’t have such a big impact.

The table below shows the estimates:
