User Rating:There aren’t a lot of game show games for the iPhone and that’s criminal. It screams for a recreation of what its like to stand behind the buzzer on some of the hottest seats in the country.
GSN’s "Catch-21" app, based on the original game show of the same name, doesn’t exactly recreate that moment in the spotlight but it does offer a fun variation of the show’s bonus game that makes for an entertaining and quick diversion from the real world.
The game takes the player through a standard deck of cards and they have to place them in one of four columns in order to get "21," just like "Blackjack." The differences are you have a limited number of discards for cards you can’t use, points are awarded for clearing colums and Jacks can go wild in the game’s "Jack Attack" mode.
Just because the app is just an easy way to advertise a cable game for practically nothing doesn’t mean it’s a waste of your wasting time. It can actually become calculating, almost addictive to play if you’re looking for a few minutes to kill waiting in the doctor’s office or trying to catch a plane that never arrives at Chicago’s O’Hare.
It also does bog itself down in advertisements for the show. They don’t interupt the game and are very subtle and never get in your face. It features the show’s logo, a small banner ad and that’s about it. The rest is dedicated to letting you play the game.
If you’re a fan of card games and game shows, it makes for a fun and (best of all) free diversion for your iPhone.
Quick Take
Value:It's free and it's fun, what more do you need to know?
Would I Buy Again:Again, it's FREE. Do you need me to make change for NOTHING?
Learning Curve:If you know how to add and play "Blackjack," you can learn how to play this game.
Who Is It For:Game show fans, gambling addicts who are one hand away from losing their house
What I Like:It does clog the interface with advertisements for its show or the GSN network.
What I Don't Like:It doesn't mirror the actual game show experience as much as I hoped it would.
Final Statement:Catch this one.
