Golf Match up!

By

On December 18, 2008

I will begin by saying, Congratulations to all the golf application developers out there. You have over exceeded the expectations of what a golf application can do and with all respect, took advantage of every nook and cranny that the iPhone has to offer to bring us the best experience on a golf outing.

As I contemplate and write this article, I think it’s suffice to say that this article warrants a blog for all the golf applications that will be released in the next few days. We have amazing golf applications that are constantly evolving right before our eyes and believe me, reviewing every one of them and deciding the method to the madness is one heck of a task.

In the next coming days, perhaps weeks, we will bring to you our deep analysis and review of each application and hopefully, by the time you read through each application, you can decide what suits best for your outing. We do plan to have a showdown between these applications but that is slated for a later time.

If your golf application has been left out, please feel free to contact me and we can try to include them here. Please do note that most of the golf application developers were contacted several weeks ago prior to this posting and if you were one of the developers to have opted out, well, more money to another developer.

In addition, we also did handpick top golf applications that we considered top of their game (no pun intended). Perhaps, we may have been biased but we wanted to give you our full head-on, no BS review that will give you the feeling to have purchased the best bang for your buck.

Lastly, every application was field tested during an outing to see whether functionality and workflow wise, it works. Sometimes simple is better, but we’ll see as you read on.

So let’s begin.

New In The App Store – 12seconds

I still find it rather frustrating that Apple has not added the capability of using the iPhone’s camera to take video. It doesn’t really make sense to me but then again it’s only one of a number of moves that Apple has and continues to make that are beyond comprehension. As a result, for the for suitable future were left trying to find workarounds. Some have chosen to jail break their iPhone’s well others have just given up and grabbed up one of of "flip video minos".  (that would include yours truly.) Now some innovative folks have found a unique way to get some of that functionality right on their iPhone’s without having to jail break.

12 seconds is both an iPhone application and a website for sharing your creations. The iPhoto application creates an effect that, up to a certain degree, creates the appearance of a brief video clip. It works this way —

Quick Contest – iMenorah Giveaway

I really liked iMenorah. A lot of thought went into making this app. After posting my review immediately received an email from someone who commented, "While I might not otherwise look at an applike this wWe’ll be on a famiy roadtrip the first day of Hannukah and this is a perfect solution!"

iMenorah received an update last night. Itis not a far smaller and more compact installation that can be downloaded via EDGE or 3G network. (Previously WiFi was required.)

The good folks at Jutanabet have provided a code for us to give away. (Thanks guys!) So with Hannukah just around the corner…

SlingPlayer is Coming!

SlingPlayer in the Approval Process!

Yes, the long awaiting Slingbox iPhone Application is undergoing the approval process.

What is SlingPlayer?

First visit, https://www.slingmedia.com and you can see how great this application is going to be! For people who went from Windows Mobile devices to an iPhone and lost this ability to have your TV at the palm of your hands, well, it will soon be over! You can start to gain more pounds and regain your couch potato status, anywhere and everywhere!

Of course, for those starting out to invest in this, it’s not as cheap as the application that ORB (https://www.orb.com/) provides but really, comparing the two is like apples and oranges. With the Sling application, you are required to purchase their Slingbox which attaches to your cable box which can be overwhelming due to its price tag but that’s technology for you.

For those who have been using it for years, you know what instant gratification it has given you to never miss a recording or never miss a TV program.

It’s not for the faint of heart and I wouldn’t have suggested this 3 to 4 years ago when Sling Media first roll out this idea. Never mind the fact that we were still living on the “Edge” network days but with 3g, wifi and the ever evolving rumors of higher speed access today, the streaming is smooth as butter. Don’t blame me if it cut’s in and out for you, blame that on ATT’s spotty service at times but I can say 90% of the time, it is going to impress.

Quick Update: Well, all good things come to an end. This story has been debunked. We will have to wait a bit or a lot longer. Back to the drawing board. I guess it was too good to be true!

New In The App Store – iGottaGo (It Is Not What You Think!)

By

I know what you’re thinking and you’re wrong.

iGottaGo isn’t like those newly permitted "potty-apps" like Pull My Finger.

This isn’t "iGottaGo" as in "iGottaGo To The Bathroom!"

This is "iGottaGo" as in "iGottaGo Because You Just Won’t Shut Up!"

As the developer explains it…

(Huge) App Update – Notebook

By

If you use an iPhone and Toodledo you are likely to be familiar with Appigo’s ToDo and Notebook.

ToDo syncs with Toodledo’s task management while Notebook syncs with the Notebook feature Toodledo added some time back. Best of all, while the two applications work independently they also interact with one another seamlessly.

Tonight both apps received an update and while ToDo’s is mostly bug fixes, Notebook’s update is HUGE!

Netflix + iPhone = Total Queue Control

I had a subscription to Netflix for a number of years and really enjoyed the service. About this time last year, however, I realized I wasn’t viewing enough movies to make the monthly fee worth the cost. Add to that the fact that they were rolling out their streaming service but the movie were limited to Windows only, and… well I ended up canceling my subscription.

After learning that the service now streams to Mac’s last week I decided to give Netflix another go. I thought it was worth a look so I re-upped last week and I’m glad I did!

Free (For Now… Act Fast) – Topple

Dimitri loved Topple, the "most addictive stacking game ever is exclusively available on iPhone & iPod Touch!" He wrote-

Unique and incredibly addicting, Topple is a new idea with some familiar concepts.  This developer clearly gets the concept of using the iPhones accelerometer and touch features as a core part of this game.

At the end of the review he noted- "It is a fun game and is well worth the $.99."

Now, thanks to a price drop, you don’t even have to pay $.99 for it.

App Update – iHeartRadio

By

On December 14, 2008

I’ve been on a bit of an internet radio kick lately. That isn’t a surprise since the iPhone, with it seemly switching between WiFi and 3G, makes a superb device for streaming music. When I looked at iheartradio I found it to be good but no great. While it streamed music in high-quality AAC the available radio stations were kind of limited. In addition I found the app a bit barebones and it did not work on my Touch.

Well, iheartradio has been completely rewritten and it definitely warrants another look. Among the changes…
