The Waxwing, the Barnacle Goose, the Reed Bunting… You’ve probably never seen these birds in your life, but you may have heard them! With the aptly named Chirp! app you can find out how they (and over a hundred other European birds) sound.

Every bird comes with a picture, often even quite a few pictures, and the sound he or she makes. It’s fun to just browse through (what DOES a Bearded Tit sound like?) and there’s a quiz that got me very competitive. They also included a very useful option to list birds according to how common, or rare, they are, and a map that shows their distribution. (alas, no Bearded Tits near where I live) What I missed, but that may be very difficult to build, is a functionality that allows you to tape a bird’s song and then find out which bird it is. A Birdsong Shazam, so to speak.

There are also more specialized bird guides on offer, for instance a field guide for British birds, and a special edition for Canada. If you are planning a trip somewhere new, and you are remotely interested in what’s chirping in the woods, give Chirp! Bird songs Europe a go!
