The amount of strange, semi-comprehensible iPhone games coming out in recent times has left me in a state of nameless confusion. In all honesty, I don’t think it takes much of a genius to come up with some of this stuff, as everyone seems to be desperate to emulate Angry Birds in creating a quirky, simple, but extremely appealing iPhone game.

I don’t know if Dudu Rush is a Japanese game, but it certainly creates the impression of being one. You control one of three what-can-only-be-described-as thumb people – Dudu, Nunu or Ruru. Each of these strange, thong-wearing creatures represents a different difficulty setting, but apart from that they share the same skills of jumping, shooting projectiles, and running without the possibility of stopping.

Since your thumb-people can’t help but run, the main buttons in the game are jump and shoot. This makes for some simple but enjoyable gameplay, as you blast and jump your way through psychedelic 2D platformer landscapes. The enemies consist of slightly more evil-looking thumb people, who spend their limited lives running back and forth across the game’s platforms.

Diversifying this simple game formula is the option to purchase upgrades for your heroes. These include temporary power-ups such as invincibility and spinning-jumps, and also permanent upgrades to your firepower. This adds a tiny bit of variety to what is otherwise quite a basic game.

Dudu Rush has several game worlds, each of which contains plenty of fundamentally identical levels. The creatures and backgrounds in the game are pretty, in a shroomy kind of way, making the game relatively pleasing on the eyes. The gameplay may not be as intelligent or addictive as some iPhone games out there, but it should keep you mildly hooked for a short while.

Quick Take

Value:Medium.

Would I Buy Again:No

Learning Curve:Low.

Who Is It For:People looking for simple gameplay with some pretty visuals.

What I Like:Psychedelic backgrounds.

What I Don't Like:Gameplay's a bit too basic.

Final Statement:Psychedelic 2D platformer involving jumping, firing thumbs. Bring on the next nonsensical game!
