User Rating:You know those internet banners that promise unlimited free, legal music? Yeah, the ones that are always scams. Well something similar has made it to the App Store, but unlike the online services that make your credit card scared to sleep at night, Free Music Download Pro Plus will actually provide you with some free music (minus the astounding price of $1 for the app, which comes with a free version you can try, mind you).
This app is pretty simple. There is a browser, which you use to download free music from Jamendo, Last.Fm, Audio Archive and some other sources. It can pull music from many pages, provided you are using the in-app browser. Similarly, you can download audio books from well-known sources, as well as videos.
After you have found an MP3, WAV, or M4A file that is worthy of space on your iPhone or iPad (this app is universal), click download in the browser and your song will be downloaded. You can then view download progress in the Downloads tab. After your song has been downloaded, you can listen to it by pressing on it in the Player tab. You can repeat your newly-downloaded song, or shuffle it in a mix with all of your other previously-downloaded songs. This pretty much goes without saying now that multitasking is available, but all of your music can be played even when the app is not front-and-center.
This app is able to do what it claims that it can, and that is download free music. The app cannot put songs that are downloaded into your iPod (it’s just not possible for an app to do this), which may be a deal breaker for some. For those not deterred by this fact, though, this is a good app that is simple to use and the app will save you music money.
Quick Take
Value:High
Would I Buy Again:Yes
Learning Curve:Low
Who Is It For:Anyone who finds their music from places other than iTunes
What I Like:The app is simple and does download freely available music
What I Don't Like:The music is obviously not integrated with the iPod app, and things like no album art support and the always-present Downloads tab badge are bothersome.
Final Statement:Whether or not songs should be downloaded on the computer (where you can import them into iTunes and have them forever) is for you to decide.
