One part of reviewing iOS apps that intrigues me is the various niches you discover that server particular segments of a person’s app needs. When I saw the name Geogame, I immediately thought I would be reviewing another location based game that have becomes the rage on the app store. It was to my surprise that Geogame World Series was, in fact, a geography trivia game. While this is not so unusual, I then discovered during my research of the app, that there are dozens of geography trivia games.

While I didn’t have the time to actually use any of the other games, I will make a few comparisons from the features and screenshots posted on their app store pages. Right off I noticed the cartoony nature of Geogames’s competitors, while Geogame maintains a clean, minimalist look that only makes use of default iOS interface elements. The action of choosing an answer is done with a list, unlike other games where you apparently drag your answer to the correct place on a map. As an educational tool, Geogames appears to be directed to an older audience, or at least one’s that wish to study without the frills of games.

During the quizzes, Geogame shows you a country on the map, while you choose from a list of four possible countries. Geogame can quiz you on country names, flags, currency, or capitols. After each round it, you can review your score and see what countries you missed. Geogame has both a list view as well as a map view to show you the hits and misses. From the map you can tap on a country to load up its Wikipedia page to read more about it. Geogame stores Wikipedia pages on the device for faster access later.

Geogame is free to download and contains the South America zone which you can play completely. Each additional zone is $.99 or you can purchase all six zones for $3.99. From the settings you are able to access the IAPs, adjusts your time for each question, and turn on a learning mode where you can simply browse the maps and Wikipedia pages for a zone. One annoyance I found was that if you tried to play a zone you had not purchased it would simply tell you to purchase it. I think it would make it more convent you send the user straight to the IAP for that zone so they could unlock it immediately. Otherwise, Geogame is a fast and well laid out trivia game that could be a defiantly help for those students preparing for a geography test, or the globetrotter to be.

We rate this app 4 out of 5 stars.
