An impressive app, albeit very expensive, GolfSites allows golfers to tap into GPS technology to help with their game.
The basic purpose of GolfSites is to find their golf balls. With an extensive database filled with maps of many golf courses around the world, GolfSites is able to match up golf courses the player is located at while using GPS technology to help track the game. Through photographic maps, the app is able to pinpoint the various locations of players and their balls with significant accuracy. However, GolfSites does take a fair bit of time to respond as it tracks your ball down.
That’s not all, GolfSites also helps in breaking down the course layouts to golfers, with information such as the yardage and par difficulties as well as locations of obstacles like water hazards and sand bunkers are also available through a few simple taps. GolfSites does not merely skim through these technicalities, but instead produces to great details the statistics of each individual hole. With a huge selection of golf courses all over the world, it is a wonder to how they managed to collate so much data.
There is really hardly any fault to find with GolfSites. If any, it would be how having to tap the app after every shot wastes some time and could possibly hold up play. It would be nice if the whole process was automated, and the app could lock on to the ball and constantly refresh itself on the ball location. However, this would probably be rather taxing on the device’s battery.
One thing worth noting is that while GolfSites does have an extensive database of golf course layouts, only 5 are made available free of charge after purchase of the app. Upon creation of an account, 5 credits are given to users to download 5 layouts of their choice, with subsequent credits costing them through in-app purchases. For such an expensive app, I would have expected all the maps to come bundled in, inclusive of the default app price. As such, this variable price range does put GolfSites on the upper tier of iOS apps
For an iDevice app, GolfSites is very expensive standing at $24.99. You could probably do without it and play golf the classic way, finding the ball manually. However, if you can fork out the extra cash, GolfSites brings added convenience and leisure to your game by helping you track everything. From the flight of your ball to the distance covered by individual clubs. This is akin to having a virtual caddy anywhere, any time.
