Grand Theft Auto 3 for iOS is of course the iOS port of the smash hit video game that was originally launched for play on PlayStation 2. It’s actually in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the game’s original release in 2001 that the iOS version, designed for both iPhone and iPad, was finally made available.
Grand Theft Auto 3 for iOS (hereafter referred to as GTA3) is, not surprisingly, a worthy addition to the acclaimed GTA series by Rockstar Games. It inherits the gameplay as well as the storyline of its source material, and in so doing offers hours of high-octane entertainment.
GTA3 follows the story of Claude, a citizen of the fictional Liberty City, who at the beginning of the game is double-crossed by his girlfriend Maria right after they robbed the Liberty City Bank. Claude gets arrested and incarcerated. But while being transferred in a police convoy, a plot to kidnap another prisoner suddenly sets him free. Now, along with another escaped prisoner named 8-Ball, Clause is set to ascend the crime ladder in Liberty City and ultimately exact revenge on Maria.
To complete his vengeful mission Claude must first accomplish a series of smaller missions, all of which require navigating the city’s far-reaching web of lies and depravation. Controlling Claude’s movements, by foot or by car, is done by pressing the appropriate onscreen buttons. There are the all-important directional buttons for steering whatever car Claude has managed to hijack or for guiding Claude himself while he’s on the run. There are buttons for accelerating and braking as well as buttons for jumping, sprinting, punching, and shooting. They all make for fairly straightforward controls, in addition to the onscreen map and other heads-up display items. Moreover, their positions on the screen as well as their sizes can be customized if desired.
Of course, GTA3 wouldn’t be GTA3 without the excellent graphics and excellent soundtrack. The original version was the first in the series to feature a 3D game engine, and the iOS version is more than capable of running that same engine. And just as the original featured authentic-sounding radio stations in the background, so does GTA3 for iOS. GTA3 is an extremely satisfying treat to players, whether already familiar with the GTA series’ sprawling world of crime and violence or just about to be introduced to it.
