Would you like to take an ugly naked guy on a bicycle ride? Yuck, me neither! Apparently, the editors at Apple think it would be pretty fun as Icycle: On Thin Ice was one of the featured apps of the week. Lets see if that holds up.
It is either the next Ice Age or the post-apocalyptic era and our Earth is just a giant ball of ice. Our poor naked guy, Dennis seems to be the last man alive and has only a bicycle to survive the cold. Helping him get to some place safe if any, is your objective.
Each level gives you a path over the glaciers and you have to pedal your two-wheeler across. The surface is covered with cracks, ice spikes, broken glasses, posts and sharp ruins while other times, the glacier itself starts to slide over one another or gush like a volcano or even crumble into pieces. Not so easy for world’s last man!
You have the right and left buttons for side scrolling and a jump button to you know what. But if you’re in the air, you can tap the jump button to bring out the sturdy umbrella and drift through the chilling breeze. This can be helpful not only in small cracks but also to fly between blocks and to take deep falls.
Collecting ice cubes on the way and using it to buy upgrades, roses, clothes, spares, new umbrellas and rides are in place too, along with an in-app store for getting more cubes. Roses can be used to skip an area while spares help to restart from a checkpoint.
The controls aren’t as convenient as one would expect but I guess that is deliberate due to the cranky old bicycle. The animations are one of the coolest ever and starts impressing right from the intro video. They are not very intense or life-like but 2D cartoon styled with stunning and unique effects. The gameplay is original and harder than usual, but impresses us at almost all levels.
To conclude, we think Icycle: On Thin Ice is a steal for the one buck.
