If you are a network administrator, webmaster, Internet developer or the person in charge of maintaining the integrity of your network infrastructure, you are probably well aware of the benefits of a traceroute. This is a tool that allows you to test your network and also see any real world problems like downed links or problems with multiple paths.

Until now, running such a diagnostic required a computer, but the Nice Trace app lets anyone follow the route to a host site through their mobile device. The Nice Trace app uses an exclusive algorithm to reach the destination, and provide analytical data faster. It operates along WiFi, 3G, EDGE, and GPRS networks and can provide a staggering amount of data. For example, it lets the user search the WHOIS database to see the host name and full IP address information on the far end, and this helps with downed links or faulty paths.

It gives reverse host name and country of origin information, allows the user to see network range and AS numbers, and also delivers quality data around packets. For instance it gives the average packets for round trip time as well as the percentage of those lost. All data delivered in the app is easily copied and pasted, and all data can be delivered while functions are in progress. The user can simply pause the app to move into additional features.

There are other traceroute utilities available, but the Nice Trace app is among the most up to date and thorough around. It operates with iPod Touch and iPhone devices.

This app costs $.99 and any updates will be available free of charge.

If you need to remotely access a traceroute feature, this is a good and reliable app to choose.
