Think fast – when is asparagus fresh in your part of the world? What season should you be buying citrus from your local market? There are all kinds of reasons to buy locally grown and seasonal produce, but one of the challenges to doing this is to know what, when, and where. With the Locavore app, however, a user’s location, local foods, and area markets are only a few clicks away.

This app uses several powerful databases to deliver a wide range of information that is area specific. First it identifies the region of the user automatically (this can be overridden by someone on a trip or vacation). Next, it determines which foods, from a list of more than 230 are in season for that area.

The app also lists what will be coming into season shortly as well. The user can find out the location and address of all of the farmer’s markets in their area in order to get their hands on many of these nutritious items, and even head to Epicurious to get recipes for preparing them.

The Locavore app is really the only of its kind for iPhone and iPod Touch users. While there are many cooking and gardening apps, there are none other that direct the user to the right seasonal produce and the outlets for obtaining it.
