What’s the best way to know the weather conditions at a certain location? Usually it is through some sort of live video footage, but this is something rarely available. The Coastalwatch app, however, delivers live camera footage from “surf cams” mounted at Australia’s 110 best beaches. If you are an avid or devoted surfer it is quite likely that you will want to dedicate your surf time to those places where the waves are at their peak or finest conditions.

This app lets you first find the best beaches nearest to your location, and then gives live video of each site. It then allows the user to add any favorites to a quick view list. In addition to video feeds, the app also delivers such details as swell and wind indicators, wave data, tidal information, the UV index, a five day weather forecast for that area, a wind history and a Google map view of the area. The on-board search engine will also allow the user to find beaches by location, and conditions too.

The Coastalwatch app comes in a “lite” version that delivers comprehensive data, but only limited camera feeds. Apart from this variation, there are no other apps for iPhone and iPod Touch units that extend such detailed information about the Australian beaches.

The full version of the app costs $2.99 to download, and it is continually updated for free.
