Similar to SayHi Translate, iTranslate Voice HD uses your iPad’s microphone, a data connection, some remote translation software and your iPad speakers to adapt whatever you speak into another language.
The app is amazingly simple to use. There are two buttons at the bottom of the screen to translate from one pre-chosen language to another. Tap either of them and speak into the microphone in that language. The program will then translate your words in sound and present text on the screen in both languages. You can translate between 31 languages, but 8 of them don’t have the text translation capability (probably because they use different alphabets).
There is a settings section to auto-detect the end of your speech and a variety of other functions (including shaking to repeat the spoken translation). You can also control the volume of both microphone and speaker from the app, you can choose between male and female response voice and you can use AirPlay to project the response to your Apple TV.
Naturally, this app would be an invaluable tool for travelling. Provided you had any sort of data connection, language would no longer be a barrier to going to many different countries. Translation isn’t perfect. I had one or two instances in my test where the microphone didn’t quite understand what I said. However it gets close enough to get the general idea of whatever the other person is talking about.
As with SayHi Translate, for 99 cents this app is a bargain. I suspect more apps like this will be available in the future. For pity’s sake, pick one up.
