Have you ever wanted to play Super Mario on your iPhone or iPod Touch? Ran countless searches on “Mario”, “Bowser” and “Princess Peach” in the hopes of bringing your childhood hero to the iScreen? A pity Nintendo never did publish an iOS rendition of the popular game. However, things are set to change with the introduction of Lep’s World Plus.

While not quite Mario, Lep’s World Plus sets the stage for a Mario-like adventure with stages looking similar to that of Super Mario. Moreover, items and adversaries reminiscent of the mushrooms and flowers in Super Mario are present too.

When the game was first launched, it was a very obvious Mario clone with the brick blocks waiting to be smashed and power ups waiting to be collected. The stages were virtually identical to that of Mario and the power ups worked the same way too. The only difference was that Mario could shoot fireballs and our leprechaun could not. However, this was rectified in an update that granted the leprechaun the ability to shoot acorns, and the stages were also revamped. This greatly impressed me, for Lep’s World Plus no longer hid itself in the shadows of Super Mario, and was now an original game of its own.

In this game, one takes control of a leprechaun searching for a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. The controls are fairly simple, with left and right arrows for movement as well as a jump and shoot button. Holding the jump button enables one to jump higher, and a well-timed double tap of the button allows for a double jump. The leprechaun is fairly easy to control, and everything is simple to comprehend.

My only gripe about the game is that the movements of the character seem too artificial. The leprechaun seems to glide around rather than walk, and jumps have him slowly gliding to the ground rather than landing with a thud.

All in all, the game impresses. For $0.99, Lep’s World Plus is definitely worth that one dollar.
