The sheer variety of randomness in iPhone games is part of the format’s charm, and is responsible for spawning such weird and wonderful concepts as Angry Birds and Cut the Rope. But is there such a thing as too quirky and random a game? LocoRescue certainly begs this question.

The basic idea of this insanely Japanese game is to use trampolines to bounce fat Asian-looking people and strange creatures across the screen to safety, while avoiding the bits of furniture and, for some reason, Hot Dogs that fall your way (challenging the idea that all consumable food in a video-game is a good thing). If you let too many friendly critters hit the ground or eat too many hot dogs, you die.

What makes this game interesting, for a short while at least, is that every level in the game has its own gameplay niche. The first ‘world’ of levels, for instance, is made up of retro video-game-themed levels. So in the PacMan one, you have to bounce your friends across the screen while keeping the ghost away from you, and there is also a level based on the recent arty platformer Limbo, in which everything turns spooky and spectral.

The variety of levels is innovative and intriguing, but the gameplay is hectic and often frustrating. Your thumb basically has to cover the trampoline in order to move it,so you never fully see what’s going on on the screen, and it’s also quite prone to being unresponsive; a major flaw in a fast-paced, reflex-based game.

The gameplay is reminiscent of Nintendo’s ancient Game & Watch Gallery, but is more complex and flawed. If you can get past this, then the plethora of levels, game modes and achievements for you to win, as well as access to online leaderboards, may keep you entertained for a decent amount of time… if you can appreciate its outright weirdness.

Quick Take

Value:Medium.

Would I Buy Again:No.

Learning Curve:Medium.

Who Is It For:Fans of Game & Watch Gallery or other distinctly Japanese weirdness.

What I Like:Varied levels with unique gameplay and plenty of videogame references.

What I Don't Like:Gameplay can be unresponsive.

Final Statement:A colourful and chaotic game which will appeal to some (See 'Who Is It For'), but be too overwhelming for others.
