User Rating:My first impressions weren’t so good for this reputed game, as it seemed to be an unnecessarily complicated version of the good old brick-shooter game. But, once you are through some levels, you start enjoying the highly polished and flawless gameplay of Magic Orbz.
This 80 megabyte ipa packs a 3D BreakOut-themed game where you use the ball (orb) to bring down pirates, knights, monkeys, aborigines, tigers, trees, ships and God knows what else. The game is divided into 5 sets : Pirate, Shark, Shaman, Tiger and Santa and each set consists of 10 correspondingly themed levels. You have a curved bat for deflecting the orb while it bounces off other objects or the sides of the canvas. Miss the ball to loose a heart or put the bad guys beneath the ocean to proceed.
To hasten things, you’ll receive many power-ups like attacks, larger bat, slower ball, curving ball etc. The weapons inventory itself weighs a ton with lasers, canons, bazookas, machine-guns etc and at times, call upon Gods for help, who’ll provide with lightnings, eclipse, meteors and earthquakes. Extra life and bonus coins also flow your way while some evil gifts are to be ignored.
We have seen a cent apps with the same boring story, but whats makes this one unique is its highly animated yet fluid effects. The crispy animations of the eclipse, canons, power-ups and even our boat’s wreck is worth a watch. The sound effects and background score are similarly impressive and adds to the thrill. The only thing I could complain were the controls on my iPhone which were too crammed (they were awesome on my iPad) but isn’t a deal-breaker. Other than this, the games scores a thumbs up and $1,99 seems to be a reasonable price for playing with the blue ball.
Quick Take
Value:High
Would I Buy Again:Give me a good reason not to.
Learning Curve:Low
Who Is It For:Two Hand Gamers
What I Like:The graphics and sounds
What I Don't Like:Controls on iPhoen
Final Statement:Feel the Magic!
Your task seems simple - clear the level of obstacles before you run out of lives. Watch out though - pick-ups and power-downs drop from the destroyed blocks.
With the high-speed gameplay, lovers of Breakout and Arkanoid should find themselves right at home. The lots of power-ups, bizarre obstacles and in-game day-night cycle really mix up the game. When you've completed it, there are still dozens of trophies to attempt.
So go on, give it a try! Smash up the levels, gawp at the cutting edge 3D graphics, and grab power-ups as they fall - but whatever you do, don't lose your ball!
8/10 - "A bright and vibrant look, an endearing character and wholly addictive… gameplay." - Destructoid
