There are numerous $.99, games that are hastily thrown together and look/feel like it. This isn’t one of them. Sure it is $.99, but that’s the only similarity. It looks, feels and sounds like a far more expensive game.  game

When you first start the game you’re immediately taken by a crisp, clean, beautiful graphics. If you have the volume turned on you hear the music start to play. It’s reminiscent of so many fun obstacle course console games. And you start to play.

What looks like it should be a simple game is actually relatively complex. The goal of the game is to move the Pudge the puffer fish through the obstacle course that is the ocean bed. There are both animate and inanimate obstacles above and below and right in front of the fish. You cannot move too high or too low on the screen lest you bump into a stalagmite. At the same time, the "living" obstacles are constantly moving making it a challenge to avoid running into one of them.

Pudge is controlled along the vertical axis with one finger. Touch the screen and he moves up. Lift the finger and he moves down. Trust me,  it’s not nearly as easy as it looks. In fact, I found it to be more than a little bit too challenging at first.

There’s even a head-to-head two player mode!

It’s not perfect, however. Each round only gives a single life before you have to start over again. Not, in my opinion, enough. Moreover, I would love it if there were settings that allow you to control just how challenging the game is.

Learning Curve: medium — getting a sense of how to control the fish is something I found more difficult than I expected
Who Is It For: people who like great obstacle course type games
What I Like: looks and sounds fantastic
What I Don’t:   you only get one life around

Final Statement: In all, the great graphics and music make Pudge feel like anything but a $.99 game.
