A Portal to another dimension has opened and monsters are pouring out into our cities, sewers, and graveyards. The only thing that can start it is a hero… a random hero. Random Heroes is the latest platforming shoot-em-up by Ravenous Games, the developer that brought is the mobile platforming masterpiece, League of Evil. Does Random Heroes show that Ravenous still has its chops, or is it just another random app in the sea of wannabes.

You start as a slow moving average joe with an anemic gun as you battle cyber zombies and other robot abominations. You will find yourself dying a lot. Luckily for you, these zombies are your typical video game monster pinatas filled with oodles of coins. These coins can be redeemed for a decent selection of ever increasing awesome guns. Coins can also help your image as you can purchase costumes. While the early ones don’t do much except give you some good looks (Abe Lincoln wielding a shotgun), more expensive ones can increase your health, speed, and damage.

There are the areas with ten levels each followed by a boss for each area. The levels are larger than you would expect and there are plenty of alternative paths and other trails you can follow in your coin hungry frenzy, or you can choose to play it safe and head straight for the end. There are moving platforms, environmental hazards like spikes and poisonous drips from the ceiling. There is no time limit to finish each level so you are free to explore and discover new areas.

The pacing for Random Heroes isn’t nearly as fast as League of Evil, but it is still important that the controls are tweaked so they they operated as expected. While they are not as tightly tuned as LoL, the controls are still decent and more than suitable for the pace of this game. I did notice that buttons were not always responding if i wasn’t right over it which put me in some tight spots when I tried to get fancy with my jumping and shooting. I also found in general the game runs out of creative steam before the end, and it becomes more of a grind for the best weapon after which the game becomes too easy.

There are IAPs for coins, but most gamers will have no problems getting the weapons they need with the coins found in the game. Despite its shortcomings, it is decent game with a moderate amount of fun. If you have a spare buck and liked their previous titles, then give Random Heroes a try.

Quick Take

Value:High.

Would I Buy Again:Yes!

Learning Curve:Easy.

Who Is It For:Fans of platforming shoot-em-ups.

What I Like:Level design, plenty of weapons, decent controls.

What I Don't Like:Short game, you can easily upgrade right to the best weapons/characters which then makes the game too easy.

Final Statement:Cyber Zombies!
