Rayman has always been the personal pride of Ubisoft and when they started their Mobile games wing, they made sure to utilize this iconic character to good ends. After grabbing a spot in Apple’s best apps of the year, 2012 for Rayman Jungle Run, Ubisoft tried to pull a similar trick last year with Rayman Fiesta Run. Lets see how that went.
The word ‘Run‘ in the name might give the impression of an endless runner game, but Rayman Fiesta Run is a side-scrolling platformer, instead. Though similar to the prequel game, this one brings in a new Food theme to its levels and hence the name Fiesta! Each zone features a specific delicacy and all the game elements including the track, trampolines, ropes, villains, music and coins are inspired from it.
Just like every other side-scroller, your aim is to reach the other flagpole without getting yourself killed. The tracks vary as cakes, candies, ice cubes, buns, cheese and chocolate bars in different levels while the other parts are made of mushrooms, sausages, chillies, sliced lemons and beef jerkys. You can’t eat any of them, by the way! Pits to oblivion, lava lakes and fire furnaces are the main anti-Raymen who can send you back to the very start. As for the controls, he is in a perpetual run and you can only make him jump and punch with your thumbs. Time the controls, evade traps, swing over ropes, pick the correct routes and collect as many coins as possible, to be the master!
The levels are very fast paced and won’t take more than a couple of minutes for most. But just completing a level isn’t enough! Based on the amount of coins collected (percentage of completion) you’re rated in gems and you have to collect a minimum number of’em before you can proceed to the next area. And if you finish a level perfect ie. with 5 gems, an alternate difficult level is unlocked – and by difficult I mean very difficult!
The animations are similar to the original with lots of bright colours and occasional 3D-shifting between the flat tracks. The controls are simple & fluent and work exactly as we intend. The music is super-exciting too with different dynamic sounds for different levels.
The gameplay as a whole is very addictive with great emphasis on replayability. And with 72 levels of intense action, you’ll get more return from your 3 dollar investment than you think. In short, Rayman Fiesta Run gets a bright green signal.
