User Rating:Given the upcoming sequel to this blockbuster, I thought it would be interesting to review the iPhone app that come out around the time of the original movie. Keep in mind that this app was $7.99 when it was initially available and now stands at $.99. Given the upcoming "Iron Man 2," someone is going to wise up soon and add a few dollars to the price.
The premise behind the game is simple. You are Iron Man and you’re flying through the air testing the armor by dodging and destroying enemy drones (in the form of planes). The graphics and animation are excellent, but I get the impression from playing this that the game was pre-made as some sort of fighter jet game and repackaged as Iron Man. If not for the presence of Iron Man himself, nothing would indicate to me that this is a Marvel Comics game.
The game has twelve levels of redundant playing with some weapons upgrades along the way. It ends with a "uni-beam" that the armor can fire out its chestplate destroying the enemy target. You can control the cross-beams for firing via the accelerometer in the iPhone or iPod touch. While I understand that sort of game control makes use of the device’s unique nature, it does make control of the game very awkward.
The game is worth the $.99 if you’re an Iron Man or Marvel Comics completist. Otherwise, I’m hoping the movie sequel brings about either a good upgrade or a better sequel game.
Quick Take
Value:Medium.
Would I Buy Again:Yeah, but I like superheroes.
Learning Curve:Medium.
Who Is It For:Comic book and/or Iron Man enthusiasts.
What I Like:Good graphics and animation.
What I Don't Like:Game play is simplistic and redundant.
Final Statement:The movie was great, but in terms of the game one can only hope for a better sequel.
