User Rating:Adobe and the Mac have always gone hand-in-hand, it seems. Leave it to Adobe to take their most popular piece of software and insure it as the top app in the App Store by giving a toned-down version for the iPhone and iPod Touch away for free. They could have easily charged a fortune for a "lite" version of Photoshop in iTunes but they didn’t. Rather, they use their core software as a promotional tool for their online service.
This isn’t actually Photoshop, you see. This is Photoshop.com Mobile. It’s a way to back up your photos online (like Apple does with your data and Mobile Me). Anything manipulated on the device can be saved and uploaded to a Photoshop.com account. Of course, you can still save it to your local device and e-mail it to yourself. With that in mind, I’m wondering exactly what Adobe’s logic was in giving this application away. Are they collecting e-mail addresses? Are they trying to compete with Flickr? Are they trying to simply drive all other photo manipulation software for the iPhone out of business? Is this "lite" version a precursor to a version with more features that is aimed at professionals? I’m not sure of the answers to any of these questions, but meanwhile the consumer reaps the benefits of a free app from a name brand.
As for the software itself, it’s pretty cool. You can select a photo from your library and do all kinds of nifty manipulations and save the new picture file. You can crop, flip, rotate and do all sorts of color and line manipulation. You can even create your own color effect theme. However, despite the price the app is somewhat limited. It’s not quite up to the capabilities of other, similar software for the iPhone/iTouch like Photogene, but it’s tough to beat the price. I give a big thumbs up for this one.
