User Rating:For those who have read our review of Robot Unicorn Attack on the iPhone, then you have an idea of what I’ll be writing for the review of this new version, Robot Unicorn Attack Heavy Metal Edition. Fundamentally, it’s the same game with slightly altered graphics and a different tune in the background. The price has been temporarily lowered to $.99 for this version as opposed to the $2.99 cost for the original, so it’s a great jumping-on point for those who have never used the app before.
As with the original, there is a settings screen to control sound and change the game controls (either on-screen buttons or gestures). For some reason, the destroyed robot unicorn seems a little more bloodied in this version.
I liked the original app because of it’s combination of girly-cutesy imagery with extreme violence (a staple of Adult Swim games). This version slightly changes the imagery and goes only with the violence. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it gives the app a feeling of promoting to a different audience.
The game seems redundant. Adult Swim would have been better served by lowering the price of the original then allowing users, through in-app purchases, to change the theme or background music of the game. Then it wouldn’t just be limited to "original" and "heavy metal" flavors. There could be rapping robot unicorn, jazz robot unicorn and Gregorian Chant robot unicorn, among others.
The game is still fun (and I still get destroyed in the end … a lot). I would recommend it for those who like to keep their blood pumping but like cute, enchanted worlds in an ironic way.
Quick Take
Value:Medium to High.
Would I Buy Again:Yes.
Learning Curve:Low.
Who Is It For:Those who like unicorns and violence.
What I Like:It's cute and ironic. Typical Adult Swim.
What I Don't Like:It seems a redundant version of the original. Nothing that new other than graphics and sound.
Final Statement:For a fantasy game with a powerful beat, look no further.
