User Rating:Before Tweetie 2, there was, of course, the first version of Tweetie. Even in its first implementation, Tweetie was already my weapon of choice in meeting my all-important Twitter needs. Its ease of use was remarkable and its visual scheme was nothing short of brilliant. So, when the developers behind Tweetie announced that they would be releasing a major update to my favorite Twitter client, I held my breath in hot anticipation. And when the day came, it turned out that the update worked out to an overhaul so big that the developers deemed it more feasible to release it as a separate stand-alone app instead. At first many users, myself included, were none too pleased about paying for a new version when the usual App Store practice is to charge nothing for app updates. But it wasn’t long before users, myself included, decided to purchase it anyway and saw for themselves that Tweetie 2 was worth every penny.
There’s a reason Tweetie 2 won the Apple Design Award in the 2009 iPhone Developer Showcase, and that reason is something so obvious you’d have to be blind not to notice. I’m talking about the design, of course. And by design I mean not only the way the app looks on the surface (which is excellent, by the way, so clean and refined as to resemble the basic appearance of a native stock app) but also the overall scheme of how the app does the things it promises to accomplish–things that constitute a long list of features that you’ll find out are all working so perfectly you’d be surprised to learn all of them come in a package that costs only $2.99. Really, just take the time to read the list of features of the app on its App Store page and I can vouch for the validity of each item in the list. I’d be more than happy to walk you through the app, feature by awesome feature, but I’m afraid that would take ages. There is, however, one feature that I’d like to point out on account of its sheer innovation: the app’s unique refresh mechanism.
Before Tweetie 2 came along, the usual method to refresh the timeline in a Twitter app is to either press a refresh button or shake the device. Well, the face of Twitter timeline reloading changed forever (I am not exaggerating) when Tweetie 2 introduced its "pull-down-and-release-to-refresh" method. But of course! When you read a Twitter timeline you tend to read from the oldest tweet at the bottom and work your way up to the newer ones, an act that requires scrolling the page upward with your fingers sort of pulling something down from the top of the screen. And Tweetie 2 takes advantage of this intuitive gesture. It’s something that comes naturally, so much in fact that I now often find myself doing the same thing when refreshing my inbox in the iPhone’s Mail app.
iPhone app developers, take note. This is how it’s done.
Quick Take
Value:High.
Would I Buy Again:Most definitely.
Learning Curve:Low. There's a comprehensive manual included in the app if you get stuck, which is highly unlikely.
Who Is It For:Anyone who uses twitter on the go.
What I Like:Every single thing about it, especially the innovative, intuitive refresh mechanism.
What I Don't Like:Sometimes incorrectly remembers upon launch the last tweet read in the previous session.
Final Statement:Tweetie 2 is the Twitter client to end all Twitter clients.
