There are many musical composition apps for the iPad, most notably Apple’s Garage Band. However, none that I have seen give you the ability to work in conjunction with other musicians like RockMate. In fact, RockMate essentially combines a board game with a band.
The app shows an instrument on each side of the iPad’s rectangle. They are a keyboard, a guitar, a bass guitar and a set of drums. In the center is a control panel to select or set a particular style of band (which allows you to set guitar, keyboard and drum styles and even remove them entirely from a particular sort of band). There is also a record button in the corner of the app.
Four people gather around each side of the iPad and play their respective instruments. They are set up in such a way so that it’s unlikely the four sets of hands with overlap. In effect, it’s a way for a band to jam together without actually bringing instruments. Naturally, the band’s music can be recorded and played back. They can create a custom style (or type of band) in which to work. There’s even a metronome function to keep the beat.
The app isn’t perfect. You’re limited to four instruments and can’t switch playing positions without physically getting up and moving to a different side of the iPad. However, I like the social aspect behind this app and am hoping that future iterations work through these issues. Plus the initial price of a buck can’t be beat. Recommended.
