User Rating:Finger-flicking penalty kicks on an iPhone screen is an inexplicably satisfying experience. Even though it’s still a far cry from the real thing, seeing your effort fly beyond a flailing goalie into the back of the net is always priceless.
Soccer Shootout lets you do just that. Rather than merely flicking the ball in the general direction you want however, there are variables. Start your drag from the top part of the ball and it’ll be a low, skimming shot, get your finger under the ball, and it’ll be a high shot. How fast your drag is also affects the strength and accuracy of the shot.
With these things in mind, the game’s Arcade mode pits you against a deceptively good goalie, who rarely sets a foot wrong. For an added challenge, you can aim your shot at the hoop that hovers around the goal, granting you extra points if you hit it, and even more if you get the ball through it. Points are deducted if you spoon your shot off-target, as they rightfully should be!
Soccer Shootout has a colourful but fairly realistic look about it, with the goalie having surprisingly life-life body physics. When you score, cameras and cheers go up from the crowd, giving you a cheap little sense of achievement at your finger-flicking skills.
The game also features a high-scoreboard and multiplayer mode (Single-screen, Bluetooth and WiFi), in which players switch between controlling the goalie and the striker. Soccer Shootout is a satisfying and playable little game, where the fun doubles if you manage to find someone to play with you.
